Improv Olymic in Hollywood, otherwise known as iO West, are coming out with a parody show based on Prince’s epicly awful Purple Rain film, not the soundtrack, on Aug. 14 and 21. Redemption is written and directed by Patricia Villetto and features musical direction by Ben Bromfield.
The sketch comedy show will feature singing, dancing and a tongue in cheek take on the film’s many stylistic excesses. A full improv cast will be taking on the various roles of Prince and his family and others, all taken to their arch comedy extreme.
What is to be gotten from this ensemble comedy performance is what rich material stylized movie’s such as their subject offer to an ironic satirical mindset. The music video cultural landscape is almost too arch to take to a satirical level.
Next stop: Kanye West?
